Three Ex-Terrorists
This was SOS' first event and to date the largest and most controversial. The "Three Ex-Terrorists" were Walid Shoebat,
Kamal Saleem and Zak Anani, who described their path from terrorism for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to peace
activism. They offered their view that Islamic terrorism comes directly from Islam itself, and not from poverty, discrimination,
or other grievances. This event generated enormous buzz on campus and had 595-seat Kresge Auditorium filled to the brim. SOS was
greatly assisted in its quest for publicity by Stanford's decision to limit the event to Stanford students and faculty and to
exclude outside press, citing "security concerns." Upon being informed of these restrictions, SOS immediately put out
a press release and subsequently received an incredible amount of media coverage. The event was sponsored by Stanford College
Republicans, The Stanford Review and the ASSU Speakers Bureau.
